Dark Spectrum – Episode 9

This week’s episode features a chapter from Dark Spectrum, Jake Ramsey Book #2, the first book Black Brick is available as a free ebook from most ebook vendors. Here is an excerpt from the show:

MY PHONE BEEPED, ROUSING me from a fitful sleep as it chased away my dreams. I stared at the yellow ceiling, reliving the previous night and wondering what I might have done differently.

In the heat of the moment, I rarely doubted my actions. It was usually obvious what I needed to do, so I acted, wrangling with the consequences afterward.

I wasn’t so sure that acting on instinct and falling back to my Black Brick training was the best way for me to operate but I was yet to come up with a better way when the bullets started to fly.

The doubts always came later, most often in the dead of night.

It had taken me hours to fall asleep. Once I did, questions plagued my subconscious, keeping me from ever reaching a restful repose. I had turned that situation with Reed into a bloody mess quickly.

My phone beeped again but I ignored it.

Two men were dead and another was wounded. I’d have thought that with all the death I’d seen I would have become used to it by now but every single one bothered me. The faces of the people I’d killed haunted my dreams.

Even Beltran.

A man I knew the world was better off without. Now that I was awake, I reviewed my actions without the warped logic that prevails when trying to sleep and was unable to come up with an alternative way out of the situation.

Before I’d attacked Sam, I’d already learned enough to know I would never work for Reed. He’d done a careful job of constructing his public image but he’d made no effort to hide who he was.

My phone beeped and I sat up, taking a deep breath and coughing. My apartment smelled, there was no getting around it. But it was cheap and the old woman who was my landlord never turned on the television or read a newspaper. Her children didn’t live with her and she never had visitors. I was convinced the smell alone made my allergies worse but considering my need for anonymity and my status as a fugitive, my pad was a veritable paradise.

War of the Fathers – Chapter Twelve

This week’s episode features Chapter Twelve of War of the Fathers. Click here to download it or press play below. Here is an excerpt from the show:

“Bram is dead,” Thon said. That took Jorad by surprise. Who was Bram? Thon’s face contorted as he continued to speak. “Stabbed a dozen times. Take him.” He motioned to the other guards who grabbed Jorad from his chair, one of whom snatched away his sword. Jorad allowed it to happen without a fight; it would only make matters worse if he hurt the guards. Erro was probably hoping Jorad would do just that. It wouldn’t matter if it came out that somebody else was this Bram fellow’s murder if Jorad cut up half the guard when they tried to take him into custody.

“I haven’t killed anybody.” Jorad didn’t know who this Bram fellow was, but Erro’s jealousy was insane if he was trying to pin this man’s murder on Jorad. Perhaps it was Erro who had been the one that killed Bram.

Jorad saw the swing coming and tightened the muscles in his abdomen. Thon’s punch took Jorad in the stomach. Melyah! His arm was like a battering ram. Soret yelped as Jorad doubled over, gasping for breath. The guards continued to hold him though Jorad saw looks of disapproval on several of their faces. Whether it was aimed at Thon or him, he didn’t know.

Thon hit him in the head, and he saw stars. It was quickly followed by another to his gut again. Jorad struggled to breathe and felt like he was about to pass out. After several painful seconds, he was on the cusp of panicking when he managed to get some air into his lungs. He breathed again. It felt like everything else in the world was pushed away as he struggled for another breath. Nothing matter more than being able to suck in another lungful of air.

Free Book and Updates!

It has been a busy couple of months but I have a number updates.

The first is that the above ebook is going permafree.

Second, readers that have been paying close attention have noticed that the Black Brick covers have changed. I really like this new cover and hope that it will be more eye catching than the previous version.

Third, the Black Brick Omnibus ebook is out (this contains Parts 1-4). You can find it on Amazon. For the moment, this and the other Black Brick parts are in KDP Select, which means it is part of Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program.

Fourth, I’m also very close to finishing the sequel to War of the Fathers. I hope to be done with that before too much longer. Once it’s done I will be getting it to beta readers and began the publishing process before the end of the year. I’ll be releasing this book in parts as well with the omnibus coming out at the end.

But for those of you wanting to read more about Adar….

I wrote a prequel to War of the Fathers titled Blood of the Redd Guard that I’m going to start publishing as parts in September.

Blood of the Redd Guard occurs several decades before what happened in War of the Fathers. Adar is the main character and it was a fun story to write. It has lot’s of action and intrigue. I can’t wait to get it out into the world. It will also feel good to have another monkey off my back.

Reminder that War of the Fathers is Free Today & Tomorrow on Amazon!

After twenty years of war, the Hunwei left suddenly. Many called it a victory, few believed that they would return.

When the war between the Hunwei and the humans ceased without warning, not many people had survived. Those survivors lost much of the technology that had been commonplace in their society, sending them back to the dark ages. More than a thousand years later, when most thought the Hunwei to be a myth, Adar believed that the Hunwei would return and resume the fight. Adar and his reluctant son Jorad continued to search for a way to defend their people. This time, without that technology, there will be nothing standing between them and the entire capture or destruction of the human race.
